Working with my hands has always mattered to me, and pottery brought me back to it, especially after my mother's passing. She was an artist and art historian, and I grew up surrounded by art. I started taking pottery seriously just over four years ago at The Clay School, studying under Kim Allison and learning the rest through self-guided practice. My background in mathematics, minimalist design, and graphic design all shape my work. I'm drawn to geometric forms and curvature, and to how shape, color, and texture work together.

I start most pieces with a plan, but some of my favorite work came from mistakes I had to adapt to.

I make functional mugs because I like art you can hold and use, and I make small vases and sculptural pieces when an idea takes hold. I work mostly in red stoneware, and lately I've been enjoying a darker brown stoneware. I try to go deep with a few materials rather than try everything, even though I really, really want to.

Born and raised in the Los Angeles area, Roy earned a BS in mathematics and studied graphic design at UCLA. He works in at the intersection of people and tech during the day and spends most evenings on pottery, which has grown from a hobby into a serious practice.
