A Quick Study on Mid-Century “Starchitects” – How They Redefined Design and Continue to Impact The Products You’re Offered Today

As Frank Lloyd Wright, Eliel Saarinen and other 20th Century giants did leading-edge original design for an elite clientele, interpretations of their work quickly found their way into the broader American design vocabulary. Come touch originals from these collections, and see firsthand the interpretation of advanced design into affordable production pieces created for the baby boom families living in then-new American suburbs. 

Bonus: Share a selfie sitting upon original mid-century masterpieces such as those once featured in Architectural Digest.

Come learn about relief printing, and get a chance to try it yourself! 

*Materials fee covers ink, paper, and instructions to pull an 8x10 print from your choice of pre-carved plates. You’ll leave knowing more about the hand-printing process, and with your own print to take home, paint in, and brag about!

Demo: Ten Little Tubes: How a Custom Bike Frame is Built

It’s just ten steel tubes. What could be so hard? 

Building a custom bicycle frame relies on a great store of traditional methods and knowledge that has been passed from builder to builder since the XVIII century. In this session we will walk through the process of creating a new frame, from design to material and component selection to the precision mitering, fit up, welding or brazing, and finishing. To the greatest extent possible, the talk will be illustrated with materials from bikes in progress.

Our teens are working hard to make and sell a their own line of products while developing entrepreneurial skills. 100% of product sales supports our teen and youth programing at our Makerspace in East Boston. Stop by and chat with some excited teens!
